The possibility of Johnny Depp returning to the role of Captain Jack Sparrow in a future Pirates of the Caribbean film has not been disregarded by Disney.

Return of Johnny Depp

After the trial against his ex-girlfriend, Johnny Depp’s career took a hit. He faced public backlash, and his roles diminished. However, he focused on independent projects, showcasing his versatility.

Depp continued to collaborate with trusted directors, rejuvenating his reputation. Through resilience, he regained acclaim, rebuilding his career as a respected actor and securing diverse roles.

Sean Bailey, president of Disney Studios Motion Picture Production, discussed the status of the untitled sixth movie of Pirates of the Caribbean series in an interview with The New York Times.

In his statement to the site, he said, “We think we have a really good, exciting story that honors the films that have come before but also has something new to say.”

Not Losing Hope

However, Bailey responded that the studio was ‘noncommittal at this point’ when asked explicitly if the contentious celebrity would be a part of that new chapter.

While categorically not a yes, it’s also not a solid no and appears to leave the door open for Depp.

There have been rumors, according to The Hollywood Reporter, that Disney had ended its agreement with the 59-year-old for the 2020 release of the sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film.

After his unsuccessful libel trial against The Sun, he received it.

Judge Andrew Nicol determined that the claims made by the UK newspaper that the actor had abused his ex-wife Amber Heard were “substantially true.”

Judge Nicol’s decision included the following statement: “I have decided that the vast majority of Mr. Depp’s alleged assaults on Ms. Heard have been proven to the civil standard.

“I also accept that Ms. Heard’s allegations have had a negative effect on her career as an actor and activist.”

Depp’s ex-agent disagrees with the publication’s assertion that Disney sought to cut off the actor’s relationship “well before the UK trial.”

“My opinion is it was related to the accusations that Amber [Heard] has made,” CAA agent Christian Carino said in In a pre-recorded testimony as part of Depp’s defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife.

Crossing Fingers

After Disney decided to proceed without Depp, it was announced in 2020 that Margot Robbie would feature in a new installment of the franchise, with Christina Hodson, the screenwriter of her Birds of Prey film, working on the script.

However, the Australian confirmed the project was no longer under development in 2022 during an interview for a Vanity Fair cover story.

“We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led – not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story – which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it,” Robbie said.

Gradually, Depp is regaining critical acclaim, earning accolades and reestablishing himself as a respected actor. Today, he continues to captivate audiences and contribute to the film industry with his unique presence.
