At Netflix, a live-action Pokémon television series is currently being developed. According to Variety, the drama will be created and executive produced by Joe Henderson, the showrunner of Lucifer. The project’s current status is unknown, but insiders have told Variety that it will be a live-action rendition of the well-known series similar to the previous comedy Detective Pikachu.

More than Planning

Nintendo is known for fiercely guarding its many intellectual property rights, but the success of the Pokémon movie Detective Pikachu at the box office probably gave the corporation more confidence to create a live-action TV show. Detective Pikachu is the second-highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time, with $433 million in global box office receipts. Netflix working with Nintendo makes sense as well. Throughout the past few years, the platform has featured a number of Pokémon series, including Pokémon Journeys and the Indigo League.

What Could Be

Also, the streaming service has a track record of producing live-action versions of several anime series. It published Death Note in 2017 and is currently working on the future live-action versions of Cowboy Bebop and One Piece. In anticipation of the 25th anniversary of the Pokémon franchise in 2021, a large number of new Pokémon games and television series have been revealed.

Also logical is Netflix as a Nintendo partner. The platform has hosted a number of Pokémon episodes over the past few years, including Pokémon Journeys and the Indigo League. It was also related to a Zelda series that was purportedly canceled due to leaks. And with that, Nintendo and Netflix may just benefit more from this partnership if it would blossom into something much more later on. Here’s hoping both companies get it right and would give fans and players what they want.
