Dr. Salima Ikram, a lecturer at the American University of Cairo, suggests in the documentary that Hephaestion could have been more than Alexander’s treasured buddy; he could have been his greatest love. The episode presents the two as not just close friends, but also romantic lovers, their personal and professional relationships intertwined in the turbulent world of ancient Macedonia. It is critical to recognize the historical context—Alexander the Great’s age, when same-gender partnerships among men were frequent. The Netflix series, as well as historical advisor Robin Lane Fox, suggest that the two have a deeper link.

Historical Perspectives of Alexander the Great and Hephaestion

In his book “Alexander the Great,” Robin Lane Fox, a member of the Royal Society of Literature in Britain, indicates a profound bond that goes beyond friendship. According to Fox, Alexander and Hephaestion loved each other, and their relationship lasted their entire lives.
