It’s hardly surprising that Avatar: The Way of Water (Avatar 2) was a pricey undertaking given that it took an incredible 13 years to produce and that some of the most advanced filmmaking equipment was used in its production.

The Avatar sequel brings new wonders and a cast

James Cameron is the director of the 2022 American epic science fiction film Avatar: The Way of Water. He also co-wrote the script with Amanda Silver, Rick Jaffa, and Josh Friedman from a story that Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno contributed to.

It is the follow-up to Avatar (2009) and the second entry in the Avatar movie series. It was produced by Lightstorm Entertainment and TSG Entertainment, and it was released by 20th Century Studios.

Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaa, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, and Matt Gerald are among the cast members who return in their roles from the first movie, while Sigourney Weaver also plays a role.

The Avatar Cast also includes Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, and Jemaine Clement as new cast members. Under fresh human danger in the movie, Na’vi Jake Sully (Worthington) and his family seek safety with the Metkayina clan of Pandora.

So it was that costly to make?

According to the most recent data, James Cameron’s epic Avatar sequel has made well over $1 billion (£828.5 million) in worldwide box office receipts, as was to be expected.

But even with this staggering sum, it’s not enough to make a profit. If the filmmaker’s assessments are any indication, not at all.

The sequel would be “the worst business case in movie history,” according to what Cameron said last month, because it would be “extremely f***ing costly” to produce.

In order for The Way of Water to turn a profit, according to the director—who is also known for creating the Titanic, Point Break, and Terminator movies—”you have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history.”

“That’s your threshold. That’s your break even,” he said.

The movie, from 20th Century and Disney, has been doing tremendously well with audiences all across the world since it debuted earlier this month.

According to the most recent data, it surpassed the $1 billion threshold this week, closing Thursday (December 29) with a total of $1.17 billion (£969.5 million).

The Way of Water, however, will need to surpass the $2 billion (£1.65 billion) threshold if Cameron’s calculations are correct if it hopes to even break even, much alone turn a profit.

We know this because the original Avatar, incongruously, is ranked #1 on the list of all-time highest-grossing films with a total revenue of $2.9 billion (£2.4 billion).

In order to equal Titanic or Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, which brought in $2.2 billion (£1.8 billion) and $2.06 billion (£1.7 billion), respectively, he suggested it would need to be in third or fourth place.

The following movie, Avatar 3, is also almost finished, according to the makers, and it will be released on December 20, 2024.

And according to Cameron, there will be a total of five Avatar movies, with the last one debuting in December 2028, for those who simply can’t get enough of the Na’vi’s exploits.
