Recent discoveries have led to the finding of massive fossil of what was known as the mighty ichthyosaur. This find would only make paleontology even better and have more of an impact on more people. This find being one of the largest and greatest ones in British paleontological history can mean only more once the experts uncover more about it.
A Massive Discovery
During a regular draining of a lagoon island at Rutland Water in February last year, Joe Davis of Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust discovered it. Little did they know, that this find would play a huge part in history and for all the coming years.
Home of its Kind
In the early 19th century, Mary Anning, a fossil collector and paleontologist, found the first ichthyosaurs, sometimes known as sea dragons because of their huge teeth and eyes.
“Despite the many ichthyosaur fossils recovered in Britain, it is astounding to consider that the Rutland ichthyosaur is the largest skeleton ever found in the UK,” said Dr. Dean Lomax, a paleontologist who has studied the species.
