J.K. Rowling first invented the magical sport as a part of the wizarding universe of Harry Potter. It involves brooms, multiple balls, hoops, and a lot of shocking brutality for a game children play. In an effort to dissociate itself from Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, Quidditch has officially changed its name.

The idea of IRL Quidditch quickly gained popularity and spread to US college campuses. It even gave rise to an official Quidditch League. The sport’s two major regulatory bodies, US Quidditch and Major League Quidditch, indicated in December of last year that they were considering a name change due to “sponsorship and broadcast opportunities” lost.

A Few Things to Consider

The Quidditch name’s ownership by Warner Bros., which also controls the Harry Potter film IP and everything connected to it, is one of the primary causes of this. The League did, however, also express discomfort with its connection to J.K. Rowling.

For her trans-exclusionary beliefs, the author of the Harry Potter books has seen a lot of backlash in recent years, to the point that many fans feel they can no longer support her work in good conscience.
