After Finland and Sweden submitted formal letters of application to join the NATO alliance on Wednesday, Vladimir Putin made the sudden decision to cut off its northern gas supply.
A Bold Move
Finland’s official reason for being given the cold shoulder is its refusal to pay Gazprom in rubles, as Russia has sought from “unfriendly” European countries.
Other Alternatives
Gasum stated that it will continue to supply gas to Finnish consumers via the Balticconnector pipeline, which connects Finland and Estonia.
The decision to isolate Finland comes just four days after the Nordic country submitted an application to join NATO after decades of careful neutrality toward its massive eastern neighbor. Hoping that this would not affect so much, only time will tell before anything massive goes down once again.
