The next generation of gamers is poised to rule the earth. People are beginning to realize that everyone games after a lengthy run as a nerdy pastime that was mostly thought to be the activity of permanently lonely basement dwellers. It seems like just a trend but this research says otherwise!
That’s a Lot
A recent analysis from DFC Intelligence estimates that by the middle of 2020, there will be close to 3.1 billion video game consumers worldwide. To put things in perspective, there are about 8 billion people on the earth, which means that almost 40% of people now play video games.
More Crunching Numbers
You won’t be surprised to learn that mobile-only gamers make up the majority of this population and are its fastest-growing subgroup. These players make up roughly half of all video game consumers, according to the research. Only about 8% of those 3.1 billion people are categorized as “committed console customers,” that is, players who only use consoles and do not use mobile devices or personal computers. According to the study, this is also the category that spends the most.
Even while it’s amazing to see these statistics in black and white, none of us should be all that surprised. Sure, a lot of the larger media still portrays video gaming as a peculiar pastime for violent loners and odd kids, but we all know that’s not the case. As long as you’ve started fiddling on a new game on your phone or PC, then you’re already part of the club!
