Even the prequels will receive the live-action treatment from Disney while they’re on a roll! Attendees at the 2022 D23 Expo were the first to hear the breaking news on the upcoming The Lion King prequel at the event’s Disney and Pixar panel.
When to Come
The prequel was initially discussed by Collider in 2021, when it was revealed that Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. would play Taka and Mufasa, respectively, in the primary roles. The Lion King will now hit theaters in 2024, according to Oscar-winning filmmaker Barry Jenkins, who will take up the project from Jon Favreau. He made the announcement during the Disney and Pixar panel.
A Strong Plot
Even while there isn’t much information regarding the plot, we do know that movie will center on the two brothers and Mufasa’s ascent to power. Expo visitors were treated to a brief teaser that depicts the narrative of Mufasa and Taka—who later takes the name Scar—through the eyes of the endearing, venerable characters Timon, Pumbaa, and Rafiki.
Jeff Nathanson, a writer and producer, wrote the writing for the 2019 version of Disney’s computer-generated version of The Lion King. He also wrote the script for Mufasa: The Lion King.
