After Jodie Whittaker’s tenure as the Doctor came to an end, a somewhat unexpectedly recognizable visage emerged from her regeneration: it was none other than David Tennant. Tennant, who previously portrayed the 10th Doctor in 2005, has briefly taken on the role of the 14th Doctor alongside Catherine Tate.

In three special episodes that will be broadcast to fans in November 2023 when Doctor Who celebrates its 60th anniversary on television, Tate has returned to her role as Donna Noble. With Whittaker’s departure, showrunner Chris Chibnall’s tenure on the program comes to an end.

Russell T. Davies will definitely be back for Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary in 2023, and he will thereafter take over as showrunner. In 2005, Davies oversaw the revamping of the popular programme Doctor Who, which drew throngs of fans. The showrunner then stepped down in 2010, and Steven Moffat and Chris Chibnall took over.
If you thought David Tennant’s arrival was unexpected, we’ve got many more shocks in store, said Davies in a statement. Tennant will make way for Ncuti Gatwa of Sex Education to take over as the Doctor’s fifteenth appearance. The route to Ncuti’s 15th Doctor is paved with mystery, horror, robots, puppets, danger, and fun, according to Davies. He also hinted that Donna Noble, a character played by Tate, was somehow involved.
