Following public pressure after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last week, Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich has announced that he will sell Chelsea FC. Abramovich had already turned over the club’s “stewardship and care” to the trustees of Chelsea’s charitable foundation, who are said to have close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
For the Better
He claimed that the massive move would be in the club’s best interests, and that he would donate the entire net profit from the sale to a newly-formed charity organization dedicated to the ‘benefit of all victims of the Ukrainian war.’
The Aftermath
As a result of the UK’s economic sanctions against a number of wealthy Russians in response to the invasion of Ukraine, Abramovich’s future at the club was called into question and thus the decision for this blockbuster of a move.
