Elden Ring is Ousted as the Most Popular Game of 2022

We can all agree that it was a fun show now that the Game Awards have come to an end for another year.

To Become Elden Lord

A 2022 action role-playing game called Elden Ring was created by FromSoftware and released by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It was published on February 25 for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

It was directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki with worldbuilding by fantasy author George R. R. Martin. The goal of the game is to rebuild the titular Elden Ring and elevate the player character to the position of Elden Lord.

The third-person perspective of the game allows players to freely explore its interactive open world, which includes places like dungeons, catacombs, and caverns.

Elden Ring was intended to be a development of the first game in the series, and FromSoftware set out to make an open-world game with gameplay akin to Dark Souls. Martin did excellent work, and Miyazaki anticipated that his input would result in a story that was easier to understand than in past FromSoftware productions.

Elden Ring, one of the top video games of 2022, was praised by many critics for its open environment, gameplay, and setting but was criticized for its initial technological performance. By October 2022, more than 17.5 million copies of the game had been sold and it had garnered several accolades, including various Game of the Year awards.

Dethroned

The highlight for many people was Christopher Judge’s acceptance speech.

The actor spent his time sincerely thanking his friends, family, and fans after being named “best performance” for his portrayal of Kratos in God of War: Ragnarök. The gameplay of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which is a significant improvement over the original game, was also shown to us for the first time that evening.

The biggest news of the night was that Elden Ring won the coveted GOTY award, but since then, it has been dethroned as the year’s best-selling title.

Hideo Kojima stopped by to finally announce Death Stranding 2 with a bizarre trailer that I can hardly comprehend, plus it was revealed that Idris Elba will star in Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty DLC.

Despite only being released at the end of October, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is officially the best-selling game of the year in the US, according to VGC. Modern Warfare II, which outsold games like God of War Ragnarök, Sonic Frontiers, and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet in November, led the charts in October, according to statistics released by the NPD Group, with just two days of sales.

This indicates that this year’s “best-seller” is Modern Warfare II. Since NPD data is always based on dollar sales unless otherwise noted, it seems likely that this honor is revenue-based.

The fact that Modern Warfare II was Activision’s most successful launch to date does not come as a complete surprise. The game sold an astounding $1 billion worth of copies in just 10 days.

Additionally, NPD said that console sales had increased. With $1.3 billion worth of consoles sold in November, sales were up 45% from the same month last year. According to reports, this is due to increased PS5 accessibility. Let’s hope that availability keeps getting better through 2023.
