Switzerland Supporting Ukraine by Letting Go of Centuries of Its Neutrality

Switzerland has abandoned its long-standing neutrality in global conflicts in order to back Ukraine up.  The European country, which notably remained neutral against the Nazis during World War II, has announced that they will support economic and financial penalties against Russia for invading and declaring war on Ukraine.

Big Moves

Ignazio Cassis, the Swiss Federal President, stated that their decision will be in line with the rest of the European Union. He also believes that the invasions are based on no moral or political principles.

Cassis expects that his country’s sanctions would persuade the Kremlin to ‘change their mind’ and stop the invasion of Ukraine.  Switzerland’s sanctions will freeze the assets of ‘designated persons’ in Russia and prevent people from entering the country who have been “highlighted by the EU’s packet of penalties.”
