It’s been decades since The Simpsons first appeared on television; the first season was released in 1989. the 33rd year of its existence. And with that, fans and viewers have always been wondering why most if not all their characters are yellow. Well now, we have an answer!

How It All Happened

But why specifically did Matt Groening, the creator of The Simpsons, choose to make the Simpsons yellow instead of any other color? In a former BBC interview, Groening discussed his desire to make the animation distinctive and how he thought that should begin with a striking color.

The Reason Behind It

He admitted that the color yellow was an animator’s idea, and he was immediately taken with it. “An animator came up with the Simpsons’ yellow and as soon as she showed it to me I said, ‘This is the answer!’ When you’re flicking through channels with your remote control, and a flash of yellow goes by, you’ll know you’re watching The Simpsons,” he stated.

Despite the fact that Groening and his team’s decision to use the color yellow was brilliant given the popularity of The Simpsons over the past 30 years, there may be some scientific justification for it. The choice of the vibrant color may have been influenced by color theory, as yellow is also known to have psychological effects on the human brain.
