The “Pirates of the Caribbean” spinoff, in which the Oscar contender was slated to star, has been scrapped, she claimed. According to her Vanity Fair cover story, Robbie said that the planned “Pirates” movie had been put on hold because Disney was unwilling to proceed with it.

A Change of Plans

Robbie and Hodson were initially committed to the project in June 2020, one of two planned “Pirates” projects, according to the Hollywood Reporter at the time. Hodson wrote the script for Robbie’s Harley Quinn movie, “Birds of Prey,” and they had been working on the movie together. Producer of the movie franchise Jerry Bruckheimer had recently confirmed Robbie’s participation.

What’s to Come

Since 2019, Ted Elliott, the original series scriptwriter, and Craig Mazin, the creator of HBO’s “Chernobyl,” have been working on a relaunch of the series, which was independent of the aborted spinoff with Margot Robbie in the lead role. This year, Bruckheimer stated to the Times that Depp would probably not play the title role in any other “Pirates” movies, while the “future is yet to be decided.”

Meanwhile, Greta Gerwig’s eagerly awaited “Barbie” adaption, starring Robbie, will be released next year. Additionally, Ryan Gosling will reportedly appear in the “Ocean’s Eleven” prequel in which she will play the lead role.
