The planned Spider-Man spinoff from Sony Pictures, Madame Web trailer, has been dismantled in its entirety. February 14, 2024, which happens to be Valentine’s Day, will be the premiere of the S.J. Clarkson–directed Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters film. Dakota Johnson plays Cassandra Webb, a mutant with clairvoyant abilities who can foretell the fate of heroes inspired by Spider-Man.
Comic book movies had a terrible year in 2023, so the multi-million dollar superhero industrial complex is practically lovable in their newfound underdog status, even though it’s hard to sympathize with them. One may hope that the genre’s current period of stagnation will give rise to the kind of innovative films that can be made when all forms of artistic restraint are eliminated. The next Spider-Man spin-off from Sony, DOA Madame Web, will not be able to reverse the decreasing trend, unfortunately.
The Renaissance after Madame Web Trailer
The latest installment in the studio’s vast Spider-Man series—which ranges in quality from Across the Spider-Verse to Morbius—sets the story in 2003, right before the terrifying two-decade dominance of superhero films that swept the theaters, seemingly recognizing the necessity for a revival. Shareholders would usually burst into a raucous clapping during an annual meeting, but even that is strikingly absent in this case.
The Features of Sydney Sweeney
One of the film’s most surprisingly funny scenes is when Sydney Sweeney, a 20-something who looks like a mousey teen and resembles a Sweet Valley High cosplayer at a Halloween party (and is one montage away from a geeky feminine makeover), pretends to be a scared teen. Compared to the wicked Ezekiel, Cassie’s psychic images of these high school ladies are far more realistic. Without hesitation, she liberates them from his malevolent web and extends an invitation to form a tentative but mutually helpful sisterhood.
A Nostalgic Delight
While the premise of Madame Web trailer is appealing, the film ultimately becomes the worst superhero flick of its era. The plot is so formulaic that not even Sam Raimi’s masterful Spider-Man movie can match the cheesy, throwback enjoyment of the Venom series. The truth is that Johnson is charming and her film marketing tour has been refreshingly honest. The script, which was written by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama of Morbius and directed by S.J. Clarkson and Claire Parker, fails to create even the most fundamental chemistry between its characters, therefore overshadowing her talents.
Spider-Woman of the Future
The mother-daughter relationship that Cassie has with her teenage friends should be the central theme of the film. But the developing protagonists of Sweeney, Merced, and O’Connor are so flat that it makes you wonder if any of those writers have ever had any kind of relationship with a young girl. A future Spider-Woman who was a pen pal to Sweeney writes, “Isn’t it sad what happened to Martha Stewart?” referring to the prosecution of the popular chef for stock fraud. These comments did not originate from an adolescent in 2003 or any other year.
Two Advancements
The Madame Web trailer, directed with the cinematic precision of a new streaming series, Clarkson has experience handling episodes for shows like Jessica Jones and The Defenders. Even the most blatantly evident movie music cue in history—a cut to Britney’s Toxic—is missed by her. Critical to building the heroes’ impending danger—a feeling of never-ending pursuit—is Clarkson’s decision to lower the tension as the film nears a moment where velocity begins to grow. Madame and the audience are both perpetually one step ahead of the plot.
Struggles of the Superhero genre
Even before the Madame Web trailer, the superhero genre has been struggling since 2019’s “Avengers Endgame” made $1.2 billion worldwide in its opening weekend, shattering box office records. New releases like “The Marvels” barely managed $47 million in its opening weekend, while other 2023 films including “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” also bombed at the box office.
